Recent Arrival Edward Cheserek may Shake up New Jersey XC ScenePublished by
Nothing very earth shattering really happens at this time of year in the world of high school distance running, as the dog days of summer are a time when runners attend running camps and pile up their weekly mileage for the upcoming season. But that’s not the case in New Jersey, where a potential superstar has created quite a buzz across the Garden State.
His name is Edward Cheserek.
He's a 16-year-old sophomore who landed on the doorstep of St. Benedict's Prep in Newark this past June after spending most of his life in an orphanage called Stadi Za Maisha in Kenya.
Stadi Za Maisha identified Cheserek as being gifted and talented and gave him a scholarship to continue his education in the U.S.
The 5-6, 125-pound Cheserek showed up at the airport in Newark with no luggage, not even a duffle bag. All he had with him were the clothes on his back.
Poverty stricken his whole life, Cheserek is being sponsored to attend St. Benedict's. He has a teammate at St. Benny's who came from a nearby orphanage in Kenya last year, but he didn't come with the same running talent as Cheserek, which is why no one ever heard of Cheserek’s fellow Kenyan or made an issue of it.
